Awana
The acronym Awana comes from 2 Timothy 2:15, which reads, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” As one of the fastest-growing youth organizations, Awana provides a local church-sponsored program for children from age 4 (if they are potty trained) through Grade 6.
- Our hope is that all club members will develop faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and build on this foundation to become steadfast, obedient servants of God.
- Awana meets weekly during the school year.
What is Awana?
Awana is a weekly youth discipleship program designed to engage kids in learning and loving God’s Word while encouraging them to serve others.
When are Awana meetings held?
The Awana program runs on Wednesday evenings during the school year from 6:30 to 8:00. Awana will not meet on evenings that fall on or right before major holidays.
What will my child do at Awana?
Each week, your child will be greeted by one of our friendly leaders, all of whom love sharing the love of Jesus with kids. After that, each week is split up into three sections:
- Game Time – Your child will stay active enjoying team-building Awana games as well as other fun, dynamic games.
- Handbook Time – Your child will have the opportunity to learn and share a memory verse, as well as other activities that he or she has been working on, guided by an Awana leader.
- Lesson Time – Your child will hear a lesson from God’s Word from one of our leaders. It will correspond to the verse and reading from Handbook Time.
May I sit in with my child during Awana?
Of course! Parents are always welcome to join in during Awana meetings.
Does participation in Awana cost anything?
Yes. There is a small charge for an Awana uniform (if your child desires to wear one), an Awana handbook, and dues for the Awana program. However, these charges are very minimal. If your child is brand new to Awana, expect to spend a total of $50 or less for everything that they would need for an entire year of Awana (uniform, handbook, and so on). If cost is an issue, Awana scholarships are available to students in need.
May I bring my child to a few Awana meetings before officially committing?
Absolutely! Coming to Awana a few times doesn’t commit your child to joining us for the entire year. Your child is welcome to join us whenever he or she can during the year!
I’m afraid that my child won’t be able to keep up with the Awana handbook.
Awana has done an excellent job of making their books accessible for kids of different backgrounds, learning abilities, and knowledge of the Bible. We also offer an Essentials Book, which is a condensed Awana book designed for students who aren’t as interested in keeping on schedule during Handbook Time. Even if your child falls behind, we encourage him or her to work at a personal pace through the lesson book.
A note about safety at Awana:
We take the safety of your child very seriously. All Awana leaders are faithful Christians who love the Lord and love working with kids. All adult leaders and helpers have a verified background check on file with the church, and these are renewed regularly. Several members of our security team are stationed at drop-off and pick-up locations at the beginning and end of Awana; they also monitor everything going on throughout the building during our Wednesday evening gatherings. We keep emergency contact information for each child on file in case any other issues come up. You definitely can feel safe leaving your child at our Awana meetings.
Are there other ministries going on during Awana meetings that my family can participate in?
Yes! The Forge, our Youth Group for students in Grades 7–12, meets at the same time as Awana. Men’s and women’s Bible studies often are held during this time, too; specific information about those can be obtained from the Church Office. Finally, our weekly Prayer Meeting takes place at this same time, and visitors are welcome.
Whom can I contact with additional questions?
Please feel free to contact our Awana Commander, Pastor Brad Harris, by calling the Church Office at (740) 369-3557 or by EMAIL.
